Podiatry in Victoria BC
A Podiatrist is a doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) who is qualified by their education and training to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and associated structures of the leg. They are uniquely qualified to treat the foot and ankle based on their education, training and experience. Within the field of Podiatry, practitioners may focus on different specialities including surgery, sports medicine, biomechanics and orthotic therapy, paediatrics or general podiatry.
Podiatrists are defined as physicians by the federal government but the extent of privileges is dependent on provincial mandate. After four years of undergraduate studies (usually a BSc.), the podiatric student undertakes a four year specialized medical program at a Podiatric Medical College followed by a hospital based residency. Podiatrists can order all diagnostic tests and prescribe medications required to treat the foot and leg.
The majority of Podiatrists are in solo practice but a growing number are joining multi-disciplinary groups including Orthopaedic, Sports Medicine and Diabetic/Internal Medicine.
